How to Choose Keycaps: Material, Profile and Compatibility

TAVNIXO PBT and transparent PC mechanical keyboard keycap guide

New keycaps can change a keyboard’s appearance, sound and typing feel, but color is only the beginning. Material, profile, legends, switch-stem compatibility and layout coverage all matter. Checking these details before ordering prevents gaps and mismatched keys.

PBT keycaps

PBT is valued for durability and resistance to surface shine. It usually has a slightly textured feel and a firm sound. Dye-sublimated PBT sets use heat to place legends into the keycap surface, helping the artwork resist normal wear. PBT is a strong everyday choice for customers who want long-lasting color and texture.

Transparent PC keycaps

Polycarbonate keycaps can create a brighter, more translucent appearance and allow more lighting to pass through. They are often used for accent keys or decorative sets. A mixed PBT and PC arrangement combines the solid feel of PBT with illuminated transparent highlights.

Understanding keycap profiles

A profile describes the height and shape of the keycaps across the keyboard.

  • XDA: broad, relatively low and mostly uniform rows
  • MOA and MO-inspired: rounded sculpted shapes with a playful appearance
  • MOG: rounded, bun-inspired shaping with a soft visual style
  • Sugar Cube style: tall, rounded caps designed for a distinctive soft-edged look

Profile affects wrist angle, finger movement and sound. If possible, compare the approximate height and row shape with your current keycaps.

Check the switch stem

Most TAVNIXO keycap sets use the common MX-style cross stem. That makes them compatible with many standard mechanical switches from brands such as CHERRY, TTC and similar MX-style designs. They will not fit every optical, scissor, membrane or low-profile switch.

Check layout coverage

A large set may contain 130 or more keys, but compatibility depends on key sizes as well as total count. Check the included-key image for the spacebar, right Shift, bottom-row modifiers, number pad and any special keys required by your keyboard. Compact 61-, 64-, 68-, 75-, 84-, 87-, 96-, 98-, 100- and 104-key layouts can use different combinations.

Legends and lighting

Non-shine-through legends remain visible through printed color rather than allowing backlight through the characters. Shine-through and transparent caps are better when illuminated legends or stronger RGB effects are a priority. Product images should clearly state which style is included.

Choose the right set

Select the material and profile you enjoy, then confirm the stem and every required key size using the SKU image. Remember that keycap listings usually include keycaps only; the keyboard and switches are sold separately unless the product page states otherwise.
